Open Letter - Mike Beardall

All of us at Bernhard were shocked and saddened to hear of Mike’s passing.

I read the obituary in IoG and felt I wanted to add a few of my own thoughts.

My father Jeffrey and I met Mike over 30 years ago during his early newspaper career in the Midland. He quickly became a good friend to us and to the industry at large. Mike was not only a great journalist and supporter of the industry, but he was a decent and kind man with great warmth and a huge smile. He knew the industry back to front, he knew everyone in it, he made a point of attending as many functions and trade shows as he possibly could, and he brought his own particular style and angle to every story he wrote. He had a unique talent to be fair, supportive and generous to us all. Mike was a man of great talent and one could always rely upon him for good advice, support and sensible options about the grounds and turf industry. It has been my pleasure and privilege to work with him over the years and I, and my colleagues, will miss him.

Stephen Bernhard

I have worked for Bernhard for 4 years in my capacity as a freelance writer, so I have really not known Mike for long, and certainly didn’t know him well, but from the very first conversation with him, he could not have been a more warm and welcoming man. He always had time talk, always gave sound and wise thoughts, and it was clear just how much he loved the industry and the people it in. He seemed to know everyone and understand everyone; he was considered and wise and thoughtful.

He often talked about his family and was very proud of his children and their achievements. My deepest condolences to them. Their father was a very special man.
